What is Blood Cancer?
Blood cancer, also known as hematologic cancer, affects the production and function of blood cells. Most of these cancers start in the bone marrow, where blood is produced. The three main types of blood cancer are leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma:
- Leukemia: Affects the white blood cells and can be acute or chronic. It disrupts the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells.
- Lymphoma: Affects the lymphatic system, a crucial part of the immune system. It primarily involves lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.
- Myeloma: Targets plasma cells in the bone marrow, impacting the body’s ability to produce antibodies.
Treatment Options for Blood Cancer
Treatment for blood cancer varies based on the type, stage, and patient’s overall health. Common treatment modalities include:
- Chemo Treatment: Uses drugs to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells. It can be administered orally or intravenously.
- Radiation Treatment: Uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. It is often used in combination with other treatments.
- BMT: Replaces diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. It can be autologous (using the patient’s own cells) or allogeneic (using cells from a donor).
- Targeted Treatment: Utilizes drugs or other substances that specifically target cancer cells with minimal damage to normal cells.
- Immuno-Medicine: Boosts the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer.
- Surgery: Rarely used but may be an option to remove an enlarged spleen or lymph nodes.
Who Treats Blood Cancer?
Blood cancer is treated by a specialized team of healthcare professionals, primarily including:

It is very difficult to give an exact cost of cancer treatment as each cancer case is different in stage, grade, location etc. Nevertheless, here is a general estimate of the cost of the cancer treatment that should apply in approximately 80-90% of cancer cases.
