Traveling to India for medical treatment has become a popular choice due to the country’s advanced healthcare facilities, specialized treatments, and cost-effective options. If you are planning to seek medical care in India, obtaining a medical visa is a crucial step. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate through the application process smoothly.

Step-by-Step Guide to Filling a Medical Visa Application for India

1. Understand the Eligibility Criteria

Before starting the application process, ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria for a medical visa to India:

  • You must seek medical treatment at a recognized and reputed hospital or healthcare center in India (Check out the list of The Top Multispecialty Hospitals in India)
  • The treatment must be significant, such as neurosurgery, heart surgery, organ transplants, or any other serious ailment.
  • Up to two attendants, who are blood relatives, are allowed to accompany the patient and can apply for a Medical Attendant Visa. (However, infants are allowed with parents generally even if there are two more attendants)

2. Gather Necessary Documents

Prepare the following documents before you start filling out the application:

  • Passport with a minimum validity of six months.
  • Recent passport-sized photographs.
  • A letter from the recognized hospital in India where treatment is planned, specifying the details of the medical condition and treatment plan. It is called a Medical Visa Invitation Letter.     *Please note: Depending on the country you are applying from, the embassy may have specific format in which they want the letter from hospital. It is a good idea to contact the embassy in your city/country in advance and ask if they have any specific format. You may speak to us also in this regard.
  • Proof of residential address.
  • Copy of online visa application form.

3. Visit the Indian Visa Online Portal

Go to the official Indian visa website Indian Visa Online Portal.

There are three types of Visa Applications:

  1. Regular / Paper Visa
  2. E-Visa (open only to eligible countries)
  3. Visa on arrival (for select nationalities and for entry at select airports only)

Choose e-visa option if available. It can be quicker, else apply for regular visa. Otherwise, go for regular paper visa.

Visa on arrival have quite a few restrictions and may not be best for medical travellers.

4. Fill in the Application Form

The application form is divided into multiple sections. Here is a breakdown of the details required:

Applicant Details:

  • Surname and Given Name: As per your passport.
  • Gender, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, and Nationality: Ensure accuracy as per your official documents.
  • Marital Status: Select the appropriate option.
  • Religion and Educational Qualification: Fill in accordingly


Passport Details:

  • Passport Number: As per your current passport.
  • Place of Issue and Date of Issue/Expiry: Check your passport for these details.


Contact Details:

  • Present Address: Provide your current residential address.
  • Phone Number and Email: Ensure these are correct for communication purposes.


Family Details:

  • Father’s and Mother’s Details: Including their names, nationality, and place of birth.
  • Spouse’s Details (if applicable): Similar details as above.


Professional Details:

  • Occupation and Employer/Business Details: Fill in your current job information.


Details of Visa Sought:

  • Purpose of Visit: Select ‘Medical Treatment’.
  • Places to be Visited: Mention the city where the hospital is located.
  • Duration of Visa: Typically, a medical visa is granted for up to one year with triple entries.
  • Previous Visa/Currently Valid Visa Details: If applicable, provide details of any previous Indian visa.

  • Indian Reference: Usually the hospital’s contact details. You can find it in the Visa Invitation Letter.
  • Reference in Home Country: Provide a contact person from your home country.

5. Upload Required Documents

Scan and upload the necessary documents including your passport, photograph, and the hospital’s letter. Ensure all documents are clear and legible.

6. Pay the Visa Fee

The fee varies by country. Make the payment online through the available options on the portal. Keep the receipt for future reference.

7. Schedule an Appointment

After submitting the form and paying the fee, schedule an appointment at your nearest Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) or Indian embassy/consulate. This step involves biometric data collection and submission of original documents.

8. Attend the Appointment

On the appointment day, bring the printout of your completed application form, payment receipt, original documents, and any additional documents required by the specific IVAC or embassy.

9. Track Your Application

Use the application reference number provided to track the status of your visa application on the Indian Visa Online Portal.
