- With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Gaurav Kharya is one of India’s top Pediatric Hematologists. He is currently affiliated with Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi as a Senior Consultant Pediatric Hematologist and Clinical Lead in the Centre for BMT.
- His expertise lies in Pediatric Hemato-Oncology, BMT, and Immunology. He has extensive expertise in transplanting in children with benign or malignant blood abnormalities, immunological disorders, and other conditions both nationally and internationally.
- In the last ten years, he has completed over 1000 transplants, including over 170 BMTs for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) patients—the most number of BMTs performed for SCD by a single physician in India or the whole world.
- He has become a pioneer in the area because of his cutting-edge procedures, which have made haploidentical transplant the go-to treatment for hematological problems when a 100% donor match is not available.
- Dr. Kharya was the first to perform the first Haploidentical BMT for Sickle Cell Disease in India.
- Additionally, he also depleted TCR alpha beta CD 19 in invitro by haploidentical BMT in a 4-month-old baby with severe combined immunodeficiency.
