Senior leader of Congress Party in India and Rajya Sabha MP, Ahmed Patel passes away on Wednesday morning after suffering multiple organ failures. He had been admitted at Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital since 15th November. Patel had tested positive for Covid-19 on 1st October, and his health is known to be worsening since then. The news was tweeted by Mr. Patel’s son Faisal Patel.
Mr. Patel, who was 71-years-old at the time of his demise, was considered to be quite close to the Gandhi family. Last week, it was informed by Mr. Patel’s daughter that his health was improving, and several leaders including Rahul Gandhi wished him a speedy recovery.
“Saddened by the demise of Ahmed Patel Ji. He spent years in public life, serving society. Known for his sharp mind, his role in strengthening the Congress Party would always be remembered. Spoke to his son Faisal and expressed condolences. May Ahmed Bhai’s soul rest in peace,” PM Modi tweeted.
Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called Mr Patel a “pillar of the Congress party”. “He lived and breathed Congress and stood with the party through its most difficult times. He was a tremendous asset. We will miss him. My love and condolences to Faisal, Mumtaz & the family,” Mr Gandhi tweeted.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi condoled, “I have lost an irreplaceable comrade, a faithful colleague and a friend”.
